THE BIGGEST LITTLE CITY
Reno, Nevada had a fantastic array of neon signs and neon
facades until very recently when some of the oldest casinos closed and their
signage was removed and replaced by glitzy imitations of Las Vegas.
Just six blocks long in either direction, Reno had a charming small-town feel
with much of the imagery reflecting a frontier spirit. I don’t think
I have every seen so much neon in so concentrated an area. And every tube
was working.
One of my favorite signs is the cartoon cowboy made out of the state map on
the Nevada Club. Sad to say, the casino closed and the sign was removed.
